ABLE Account Decision Guide Series

Selecting and Opening an ABLE Account

Step 3: Complete The Able Plan Application

Most ABLE plans are opened online and are managed online. You can find an ABLE plan’s website by using our state ABLE plan comparison tools. Once on the plan’s website, you will see the ABLE plan’s contact information if you need help opening your account. Note: To find the right plan which meets your needs, we encourage you to follow this guide and to use the ABLE National Resource Center comparison tools. This will help you locate the information you may want or need. Our tools allow you to review state information and take you to your chosen state to open the account.

If you do not have a computer with internet access, identify a family member, friend or service provider to help with ABLE plan enrollment on their computer. Refer to the disclosure document for exceptions in several ABLE plans which allow individuals to open an account through a bank or through a financial advisor; be advised, however, most plans do not offer this.

Some plans may have paper forms for enrollment, but it is easiest and quickest using the online application. The application will ask for information which may vary by ABLE plan.
