What ABLE Account Owners and Families Need to Know about Trump Accounts
Curious about the new 530A/Trump Accounts? ABLE National Resource Center’s parent company, National Disability Institute (NDI), developed new resources to explain who is eligible for a Trump Account, how these accounts work, including the federal seed contribution and contribution rules, and how the account can fund an ABLE account.
For families with children born from 2025 through 2028 and have a disability, we encourage you to establish the 530A/Trump Account alongside the ABLE account so you can receive the $1,000 federal seed contribution (if eligible) and receive employer contributions (if applicable). The $1,000 seed money could grow to about $5,560 over 18 years.
The entire 530A/Trump Account may be rolled over into the ABLE account during the calendar year the child turns age 17, allowing the savings to transition into a tax-free account designed to pay for qualified disability expenses while helping protect eligibility for means-tested benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid.
Visit NDI’s 530A (Trump) Accounts resource page to learn more and begin saving now for your child’s future.
National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This month, we celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities and recognize the importance of creating inclusive workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. NDI’s American Dream Employment Network (ADEN) is proud to support this mission through the Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work Program. As a national Administrative Employment Network, ADEN partners with service providers across the country who help Social Security beneficiaries pursue meaningful employment, achieve greater financial independence, and work toward their career goals. Through its network of dedicated Members, ADEN connects individuals with employment services, career guidance, and resources that support their journey toward financial self-sufficiency. Learn more by visiting ADEN | The American Dream Employment Network. If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and are between the ages of 18 to 64 and would like to learn more about Ticket to Work, click to find an ADEN Member near you! If you are a service provider interested in expanding your business by becoming part of an Employment Network, click to register for Introduction to ADEN Webinar taking place on November 4, 2026.
Did you know that ABLE savers who are employed and are not contributing to an employer-sponsored retirement plan during the calendar year may be eligible to contribute nearly 80% more than the ABLE Account Contribution Limit? This is another example of how it pays to work. Access the ABLE Employer Toolkit and join in the celebration of value and talent during NDEAM.
2026 National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM): Celebrating Value and Talent
Advancing ABLE
U.S. Department of Labor – Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) launched Make Work Pay Hub which includes the important role ABLE accounts can play in growing savings for people with disabilities. The hub provides additional resources including The Secure Your Financial Future Toolkit, developed in collaboration with NDI’s LEAD Center. Visitors of the hub will find employment lifecycle stages and tools for employers, service providers and workforce leaders. Thank you to Assistant Secretaries, Julie Hocker and Dan Aronowitz, for sharing how we can all work, save, and build our futures.
AKF Consulting Group published an insightful article this summer, ABLE 2026 Expanding the Reach, encouraging further ABLE outreach to financial planners and other trusted advisors.
Michigan Congresswoman, Debbie Dingell, introduced the Wira ABLE Act in June 2026 to improve financial security of people with disabilities. This legislation proposes an increase of the current $100,000 ABLE savings cap for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients to $150,000 as well as providing annual inflation adjustments moving forward.
NDI, ABLE NRC, and National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) along with state ABLE plans and many other disability service providers and advocates, continue to support legislation introduced earlier this year, the ABLE Tomorrow Act (eliminating Medicaid claw back, and allowing exceptions for the annual contribution limit among other enhancements) and the ABLE Employment Flexibility Act, H.R. 4644 (providing incentives that serve the interests of workers who save with ABLE accounts and their employers). To learn how you can help advance these initiatives, contact Chris Hunter, Chief Operating Officer, NAST chris@statetreasurers.org.
State ABLE Plan Updates
Throughout the past year, many of the state’s ABLE plans have participated in Abilities Expos across the country sharing how ABLE can help people save for qualified disability expenses. Your Money, Your Future Illinois ABLE Video highlights Illinois ABLE’s participation in the 2026 Chicago Abilities Expo.
ABLE plans are continually making changes to improve customers’ options and experiences with their ABLE accounts. CalABLE announced that mobile tap to pay is now available for ABLE Visa cards. The ABLE Visa card can be added to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. October-November 2026 marks a transition period for IL ABLE account holders to a new online platform. Further, some ABLE plans are introducing new investment options including target-date and shared-value portfolios. Register and learn more about these new investment options during ABLE NRC’s upcoming webinar, Growing with ABLE: Your Guide to Investment Options, scheduled for Thursday, November 12th at 12pm ET.
