ABLE Research Resolution Now Law in Maine

March 6, 2016

On March 6, 2016, Maine's State Legislator enacted into law by resolution LD 1421 (HP 967). This law directs the State Treasurer to research existing federal regulations and the experience of other states that have established ABLE programs and submit a report by January 15, 2017. This report will outline the most cost-effective way to ensure that residents of the State of Maine will be able to obtain an ABLE savings account. After the report is filed, the recommendations of the report will be used to craft a new ABLE legislation.

The members of the ABLE National Resource Center have long championed the ABLE Act as a critical strategy to providing a pathway to a better economic future for all people with disabilities. As the nation’s only disability related collaborative solely dedicated to assisting in the development of ABLE programs, the Center applauds the Maine State Legislature and Governor Paul LePage for their support of the ABLE Act. We look forward to working with other states on crafting and passing similar legislation.
